The 2019 Spelling Bee preliminary competition for Ajeromi-Ifelodun LGA was held today, Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Council Secretariat.

The much anticipated event had representatives from 48 Primary Schools within the local government with each of them filing a contestant; while the Secondary schools were also not left out.

Having produced the 2017 winner in the person of Zuffon Bukola, the organizers had their work cut out in ensuring they go on to present a credible candidate for this year’s edition.

Representing the wife of the Executive Chairman, Alhaja Mujidat Ayoola, the Secretary to the local government, Hon. Bella Adeyemi Mary, welcomed all participants and guests to the event.

“Spelling Bee competition is an initiative of the New Era Foundation through our former first lady of Lagos State, in person of Senator Oluremi Tinubu” she began.

“The programme has been in existence for the past 19 years and has gone on to add values to our pupils in the Public Primary Schools and Students in public secondary schools.”

She further stated that years before the initiative, public schools had been relegated to the background, but with the help of the Spelling Bee competition, many of the kids had been affected positively.

“Our local government has a name that makes us unique wherever we go and the name also makes a way for us. The name is Ajeromi-Ifelodun local government in Ajegunle, which means our wealth is peaceful, we are dwelling in love and to crown it all, where we are is where wealth dwells permanently” she said.

“No wonder in the in the 2017 final Spelling Bee competition, we came 1st and became the One Day Governor of Lagos State. Last year again we came 2nd, but I want to believe that today’s participants are the best among their peers and they are prepared to take back our 1st position when they go for the final at Alausa” she quipped.

During the competition proper, the kids gave a good account of themselves after four rounds that produced 10 year old Ozurumba Victory from Cardoso Nursery and Primary School as winner of the Primary Schools category.

He beat 12 year old Abdulfatai Mustequim from Ibafon Nursery and Primary School and 9 year old Okechukwu Gift from Seabreeze Nursery and Primary School to 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

In the secondary schools category, two-time participant from Newland Senior Secondary School, Yahaya Mohammed calmly breezed his way past Uwak Utibe from Reservation Senior Secondary School, Tolu and Rauf Olaitan from Tincan Island Senior Secondary School also from Tolu Schools Complex.

It would be recalled that Yahaya Mohammed lost the opportunity to represent the local government when he spelt Cinderella as ‘Cynderella’ thereby placing second in a keenly contested competition in 2018.

Speaking to Community Watch Plus after his victory, Yahaya beaming with smile celebrated his coach whom he said pushed him thus far.

“I want to thank my coach for the role he played in this victory but most especially, I thank God for the strength and grace to carry on” he said.
